Making comics: The lettering script

A quick behind-the-scenes glimpse at part of the comic process.

Today, I’ve prepared a lettering script for Star Wars: The High Republic issue 8. This is where you have a complete PDF of the art and you run through the script one last time, creating a draft for the letterer to work from.

All panel descriptions are stripped out and you make adjustments to the dialogue and SFX to make sure that everything matches the finished art. Sometimes panels have completely disappeared or been combined. At other times, the dialogue just won’t flow as it was originally written.

And then there are the points when you realise that you could have just done a LOT better!

The next time you’ll see the issue is when you received the lettered pages complete with editor’s notes, ready to check all over again!
