Writers’ habits, mugshots and tonight’s reading at the Bristolcon Fringe

Writers are creatures of habit. Maybe it’s because some of us have a strange life when we go to the office and sit about writing in our underpants.

Julia Lee talks about this in her blog at Girls Heart Books today (not the underpants bit, I hasten to add). She talks about the fact that she like using specific mugs. I’m the same. My first coffee of the day has to come in this mug when I’m at home.

Somehow it just doesn’t taste so good in a different mug.

Then there’s my notebook. As I tell the readers over at the Fiction Express blog today, I only ever writing in my notebooks and journals using a red pen. I don’t know why, but something about red ink makes the ideas come easier. I even have a favourite kind of red pen – A Uniball Eye Fine UB-157 red, don’t you know?

Perhaps it’s the years of being a magazine editor and scribbling over pages in red ink. Perhaps its just that I need to get out more. Preferably wearing more than just pants.

Which is exactly what I’m doing tonight. I’m going to be reading at the Bristolcon Fringe event at The Shakespeare in Bristol alongside Justin Newland. Am I nervous? Of course. I’m always nervous before an event, but the Fringe readings are always fab with a friendly bunch of people. Well, I hope they’ll be friendly after I’ve finished. Please no-one throw your fish and chips at me (The Shakespeare does great food which is another reason to show up!)

Here’s some more details courtesy of Cheryl Morgan. I better go and practise (after another coffee, of course!)

DISCLAIMER
Cavan Scott would like to apologise for any trauma caused by the thought of him working in his underpants. Please be assured that this was just attempt to get a cheap laugh. He is fully clothed as he writes this. In fact, he’s dressed as a giant pink rabbit. Honest.
