Interviewed in Start the Story

Interviewed in Start the Story issue 2

Issue two of Start the Story, the children’s literacy magazine, is out now. Aimed at teachers, librarians and anyone trying to inspire a love of reading in kids, the digital mag is edited by children’s authors Tommy Donbavand and Barry Hutchinson. Each issue comes with a downloadable worksheet for use in class.

I’m interviewed in the latest issue, talking about a hobbyhorse of mine – the importance of good-quality tie-in fiction. They ask me about my work on Doctor Who and Skylanders as well as my own children’s projects.

The mag also reviews my first Skylanders novel, The Machine of Doom, which they describe as “a short, easy to read adventure with plenty of action and some genuine laughs.”

Other highlights of the issue include:

  • Interviews with Irish Children’s Laureate, Niamh Sharkey and The Dandy cartoonist, Andy Fanton.
  • Graphic novel recommendations.
  • Six of the best sports-related books.
  • How to use LEGO in plotting your stories.
  • A lesson plan for The Clumsies Make a Mess of the School.
  • Starting your own webcomic.
  • Plotting stories the BAD way.
  • The two most important words in story-telling.
  • How to write a Haiku.
  • Why character names are so important.
  • Five tips for writing description.

Head over to Start the Story to find out more about the mag.

Don’t forget, you can also see my entry in the Start the Story Author directory here. I’m available for author visits for your school and library. Details about what I offer can be found at the site.
