Most ghostwriting projects start with a series of recorded interviews that are transcribed and used as the basis of your story or idea.
After initial discussions, the ghostwriter will help you create an outline for the book or article. This will map out its structure, using the ghostwriter’s experience and expertise of what will interest publishers and readers.
Depending on the book or article, a number of further interviews will be agreed to delve deeper into the subject.
If required the ghostwriter will also carry out additional research and fact-checking.
After this is all completed, you will be sent a first draft of the article or book for your approval. This gives you the chance to check key facts, make sure you’re happy with the tone and request revisions before the manuscript is submitted to a publisher.

This depends on the project. No two ghostwriting jobs are identical and the time your project will require will depend on the topic, length and the amount of additional research.
To give you some idea, a 70 – 80,000 word book will take between three to six months to research and write.
When the first draft is written and submitted to a publisher there will be a period of edits and revisions, which may take up to a month.

Your ghostwriter is paid out of the advance you are given by the publisher.
An advance is usually paid in three instalments:
- on signing the contract
- on delivery of an accepted manuscript
- on first publication.
The ghostwriter’s fee is paid in the same instalments.

[toggle title=”What if I don’t have a publisher?”]
Don’t worry. It’s extremely rare for a project to start with a publisher already on board.
In most cases, a proposal must be prepared to send to literary agents and publishers. This consists of a description of the book, a detailed chapter breakdown and three sample chapters.
I will charge a fee for preparing the proposal and sample chapters. Once a deal with a publisher has been finalised, this development charge will be deducted from the overall fee.
