Friday Update – 20th January 2023

A quick update today. This week has been all about two scripts, one that really kicked my bottom while the other, part of a graphic novel, went much better, thank heavens! Some weeks are like that. The writing just isn’t always as easy as it could be. Still, I got everything done eventually, even while struggling with a nasty winter cold that won’t give up the ghost! The first script needs work – oh, does it need work! – so, I’ll be editing that within an inch of its life on Monday. At least, the bare bones are there. That’s all you need.

Away from work, I devoured Waubheshig Rice’s Moon of the Crusted Snow in pretty much one sitting, an utterly believable (and therefore absolutely terrifying) dystopian thriller told from the point-of-view of a remote Anishinaabe community. There’s an excellent interview with Waub here, where he talks about the sequel. Looking forward to that!

Of course, it’s been a week of apocalyptic anxiety with the launch of HBO’s The Last of Us (shown on Sky here in the UK). I loved every minute, although totally understand why some find it disturbing, especially if you’re a parent. If you want something more therapeutic, I can heartedly recommend 21st Century Folk, which I binged on BBC Sounds. It tells the stories of a handful of new songs, all inspired by five ordinary and yet, at the same time, absolutely extraordinary listeners. The episodes are both heartwarming and – in the case of Andrea and Delyth – more than a little heartbreaking. Make sure you have a box of tissues handy!

What have you been up to this week? And what books, films, TV or music have you enjoyed? Let me know in the comments below!
