And so it came to pass that Cavan Scott and George Mann had their first full day in San Diego.
It was George’s Birthday so the day started with a celebratory breakfast in Little Italy. Of course, Mr Mann hadn’t learnt his lesson after Burritogate!
Personally I went for corn beef hash, poached eggs and a hollandaise sauce. Lush! By the way, don’t worry, this blog won’t all be about food for the next couple of days. Probably. There will be other stuff, like dinosaurs, I promise.
Then, there were dinosaurs (told you!) We headed to the amazing San Diego Natural History Museum for Mayan artefacts, giant sharks, dinosaur bones and lots of skulls.
Oh, and there was a museum shop. I love a museum shop – especially when they sell ONE OF MY BOOKS! Sorry, got a bit excited there, but still, it was cool to see good old Planet Dinosaur on the shelves.
The museum done, the real reason for our visit began. It was time to queue for our Pro Badges for Comic Con and PREVIEW NIGHT!
Oh. My. Goodness. Our first moment stepping into SDCC. The people. The costumes. The EVERYTHING.
Brace yourself of pictures of me pointing and posing:
And finally, one of the main reasons I’m here with George – our Doctor Who SDCC exclusive, out in the wild! Yes!
After wandering the floor, and catching up with the Titan Comics guys, it was off to the bars to first meet up with Paul Cornell, Adam Christopher, Kieron Gillen and more at Kansas BBQ before talking Bond, football, flowery computers (don’t ask) and more with Dynamite’s Nick Barrucci, Monkeybrain/IDW’s Alison Baker, the wonderful creative duo Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover and Legendary Vamperella writer David Avallone.
All that’s all before accidentally bumping into Doctor Who: Ninth Doctor artist Blair Shedd on the way back to the hotel. It was great to finally meet Blair in the flesh, rather than just via email and messenger. Looking forward to chatting to him more later.
Phew! What a day – and the con hasn’t properly started yet! Looking forward to day two!
