Encounters of Sherlock Holmes

The worst part of being a writer? The wait after you’ve sent off your first draft to an editor. Will they hate it? What changes will they request? Will they work out that you’re just an old hack after all?

I’m in the middle of this at the moment with a short story I wrote last week. ‘The Demon Slasher of Seven Sisters’ is a story I’ve written for Encounters of Sherlock Holmes, a new collection of Holmes tales that is being published by Titan Books next February. It’s edited by top chap George Mann, who also happens to be a pretty darned good author as well, you know.

I must admit at first I was a bit daunted to find myself writing Holmes. After years of watching just about every movie or TV version of the great detective and devouring both the original canon and the many, many pastiche’s I was a little nervous. Would I be able to bring anything new?

Hopefully I have and I await George’s notes with equal measures of excitement and apprehension. Fingers crossed.

In the meantime I’m off to watch The Masks of Death. You’ve got to love Cushing as Holmes…
