What to blog?

I’ve been thinking a lot about blogging recently.

I launched this site a few months back to promote my work, hawking my wares be they fiction, non-fiction, journalism or freelance editing. And my blog came with it. But, actually it didn’t. My blog became a news feed, a list of what I’ve been up to, announcing this bit of work or that release.

All good – and useful to potential clients –  but not the most fascinating of reads. And what about some of the things I used to do on my old blog: the book reviews; the guest blogs; the wibble and nonsense? It didn’t seem appropriate any more, but I missed it.

But there was another issue. I write about a wide range of areas. Yes there’s my fiction, which tends to be SF and horror-based, but there’s also my outdoor and rural affairs work, my corporate work, technology and science and more mainstream journalism. Would potential employers be put off by posts about zombie apocalypses and the like? I guess this is part of the problem of having a number of differing specialities. Sometimes they don’t exactly mesh together.

And so I’m trying something new. This blog will have a bit of everything. There will be my work announcements as usual, but we’ll also see the return of guest blogs, reviews and general wibble. However, if you’re reading this and all you want to know is what I’ve been up to professionally, then hit News on the navigation bar above and everything else will be filtered out.

I’d also be really interested to hear your views on the subject. Should a jobbing writer only talk about work on their work site or treat it as a normal blog, talking about whatever pops into my head (see rule one is the profane but insightful Official Terribleminds Writer’s Guide to Blogging about Blogging)?
