Back in 2008, I was one of the inaugural judges of the RSPB Nature of Farming Award, the annual search to find the most wildlife-friendly farmer in the UK. My fellow judges – namely Mark Avery of the RSPB, Victoria Chester of Plantlife and Martin Warren of Butterfly Conservation – sat down to shortlist four finalists from the eight regional winners of the competition and the final four were put to the public vote. They had all demonstrated their commitment to proving it can be financially viable to look after wildlife on a farm, but who would be crowned number one?
This year’s competition has now been launched, although the Telegraph has replace my former magazine, Countryfile, as media partner. From what I’ve heard on the grapevine over 10,000 people have voted in the first two weeks which is a fantastic achievement. You’ve still got time to have your say. As an added incentive, everyone who votes will be entered into a free draw to win a two-night break for two people at a luxury hotel. The prize includes a full English breakfast each morning and a three-course dinner each evening. Hmmm. Now I’m not one of the judges, I wonder if I can win the prize?
