The last couple of days have seen me nipping around on school visit thanks to the wonder that is World Book Day.
Yesterday, I hot-footed it over the Severn Bridge to head to the Rhondda valleys for a couple of visits.
First up was a visit to Treorchy Library to meet the year seven reading group from Treorchy Comprehensive. I’d been invited to talk about what inspired me to get reading and writing when I was a kid and how Terrance Dicks novelisations, rubbish horror films and a nightmare about Giant Crabs trying to grab my bum led me to write Doctor Who. They were a really enthusiastic bunch who loved reading and asked some brilliant questions, including as I like scaring people through my stories, what scares me?
After lunch, with tea served in a very appropriate mug (see right), it was off to Ferndale Comprehensive in Maerdy. This time I was talking to one of the year eight English classes, again about what inspired me to become a writer in the first place.
This session included one of my favourite questions: “Do you stick your tongue out when you write?”
To be honest I didn’t know but I’ve checked and I’m pleased to say I don’t. Much.
Today I’ve been visiting Bromley Heath Junior School in Bristol, but I’ll tell you all about that tomorrow. All I will say that it involves the Death Penguins of Doooooom!
