Maggie-StablesI have just received a text from Mark Wright to share the sad news that Maggie Stables has passed away.

To Doctor Who fans, Maggie was Evelyn Smythe, a truly mould-breaking companion from Big Finish’s line of audio dramas.

To me, she was the lovely, lovely, lovely lady I met during the recording of Project: Twilight all those years ago. I walked into the studio, a bundle of nerves and excitement to be greeted by Colin and Maggie, both of whom made me feel instantly at home. I immediately loved Maggie. She had a wicked sense of humour and a laugh that made Sid James’ raucous guffaw sound like a girlie titter. Sitting here, cut-up by the news, I’m still chuckling at the thought of that laugh. It’s very fitting that going onto Facebook, so many people who knew her have mentioned it. Laughter truly surrounded you whenever you were with Maggie.

I have so many wonderful memories of Maggie both at recordings and conventions. There’s often talk of people having a sparkle in the eyes, but in Maggie’s case it was certainly true. Warm, generous and talented. My thoughts are with Maggie’s friends and family.

To find out more about Maggie, read Nick Brigg’s wonderful tribute on the Big Finish website.

I need to work now, but all I want to do is reach for The Spectre of Lanyon Moor and hear her in action with Colin. I’ll save that to later as a treat to end the day.
