My name is Vita Ayala, and my story for DOTHA is called Monster Next Door.
What do you find scarier in horror stories: inhuman monsters or monstrous humans?
That’s a hard question, but I think I’m going to go with inhuman monsters. Human depravity knows no bottom, but at the same time, I have a much better idea for the realistic capabilities of a person. You can torture my body and mind, but you are not a threat to my soul.
No, wait, that’s a nightmare too…

What’s your top tip for creating a scary story?
Make the monsters as realistic as you can – by that I mean, make them characters that feel like they could get off the page and walk into the room. Tone helps with this, but there has to be something that is relatable, that you can practically reach out and touch. Even in the cheesiest movies, if they give me that, the hair on the back of my neck is guaranteed to rise.
