Hello fellow DOTHA creator. Please introduce yourself and your story in the collection…
I’m John Ward – a TV & comic book writer in Vancouver, BC. My DOTHA story is Contrition, drawn and coloured by the incredible Ariel Viola and lettered by the fabulous Melissa Hudson.
What do you find scarier in horror stories: inhuman monsters or monstrous humans?
This it a tough question to answer but I’m gonna go with inhuman monsters. When done well, I think inhuman monsters terrify on multiple levels – threatening on an external, internal and metaphorical level.
What scary movie, book or comic do you think every horror fan should experience?
My comic book Scratcher drawn by Juan Romera and lettered by Eric Grissom! LOL.
I found it impossible to narrow down to just one piece of art, so please forgive the indulgence:
Movies: The Exorcist, The Thing, Lake Mungo, Eden Lake, and Wolf Creek.
Comics: From Hell, and Locke and Key.
Tell me something cool about Contrition?
It’s about the horror of the human mind. MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!
What’s your top tip for creating a scary story?
Make it personal. Think about what scares you and why. If you’re creating a story that doesn’t scare or engage you as a creator, it’s gonna be hard to scare someone else.
