Counter Measures in Doctor Who Magazine

Issue 448 of Doctor Who Magazine is out now. As a self-confessed Who fan, I’ve read the mag for too many years to remember and am chuffed to little pieces that I’ve finally written for it. ‘Sounds of the Sixties’ is an interview with the cast and crew of Big Finish’s upcoming Doctor Who spin-off, Counter Measures.

Counter Measures takes characters from the 1988 adventure, Remembrance of the Daleks, and drops them into their own series. Professor Rachel Jensen, Group Captain Gilmore and Allison Williams are the Counter Measures team, defending 1960s Britain against a mixture of human and alien perils. One of the best things about the series is that you don’t have had to watch Remembrance – or indeed Doctor Who – to understand what’s going on. The entire first season has a Quatermass feel to proceedings, helped considerably by the decision to use stock music for the incidentals. As Simon Williams, the actor playing Ian Gilmore told me: “It definitely has the vibe of what science-fiction used to be,” while producer David Richardson describes it as “audio in black and white.”  Think of it as the X-Files meets Quatermass with a dash of the early Cathy Gale Avengers.

Doctor Who Magazine issue 448 is out now and you should also check out the websites of the four Counter Measures scribes: Paul Finch, Matt Fitton, Ian Potter and Justin Richards.
