And so I continue with my great blog catch-up. Where was I? Ah yes, Thursday. Still buzzing with a great day of workshops at Bromley Heath Junior School, I nipped down into town for the launch of Between Two Thorns, the first volume in a new urban fantasy series by Emma Newman. I’d first came into contact with Emma on twitter where I soon discovered she adored tea and Upstairs Downstairs in equal measures. Between Two Thorns intrigued me as it’s set in Bath where I had worked, played and lived for many, many years back in my Future Publishing days. Fairies, magic and Pulteney Bridge? What’s not to love?
The launch was a great success. Emma was as lovely as her twitterings suggested she would be (I like anyone who sits down beside me and asks if I’d like a jelly baby) and her reading from chapter three left me wanting to dive straight into the book. It was also great to catch up with FantasyCon buddies including Angry Robot editor, Lee Harris and old Future muckers Dave Bradley, Jonathan Wright and Richard Jones.
Best of all every book sold (and signed) came with a sealed, beautifully printed short story which apparently will never be printed anywhere else – a nice little collectors item to take away from a launch.
After the reading we all retired to the bar next door, although Emma explained she was sticking to the orange juice as she had another Between Two Thorns launch the following night at Forbidden Planet London and wanted to keep a clear head. However, she did hint that wine would flow after the last book had been signed – although Emma has told me since that it was actually champagne in the end. Hurrah! Emma certainly deserves it. I’m enjoying the novel immensely.
All of which brings me up to date. The last few days have been a bit manic to say the least. Mark and I have been working up the latest draft of Doctor Who : Destiny of the Doctor – Night of the Whisper while keeping the plates spinning on the next series of Iris Wildthyme. Add to that I’m been working on a top secret magazine project and polishing up the second draft of a short story. Busy, busy, busy – and loving every minute.
