Just announced by Big Finish – I’m returning to the Doctor Who main range of audio dramas with a brand new Fifth Doctor adventure starring Peter Davison (as the Doctor, natch), Janet Fielding (as the incredible, amazing, awesome Tegan), Mark Strickson (as everyone’s favourite school-boy-turned-Time Lord assassin, Turlough) and… Jon Culshaw as the shape-shifting robot, Kamelion.
Directed by Ken Bentley, Devil in the Mist also sees the return of the Harrigain, the war-loving race of space hippos I first introduced in The Bleeding Heart audio and then brought into Titan’s Ninth Doctor comic in The Bidding War.
Here they are again, this time realised by Will Brooks on the wonderful cover:
And yes… Kamelion… who appears infamously during the Fifth Doctor’s reign and, well, didn’t quite work.
I was juggling a few projects when range script editor Alan Barnes came a-knocking with the invitation to write a new audio, and unfortunately the timing didn’t quite work. So he came back with another possible slot, and one I couldn’t refuse. Would I be interested in writing Kamelion’s first proper story as a companion, set immediately after The King’s Demons? Of course I would.
And here’s the result, kicking off a run of stories that continues with Black Thursday by Jamie Anderson, Power Game by Eddie Robson and The Kamelion Empire by Jonathan Morris. You can find out about all four here.
Here’s the blurb:
The TARDIS deposits the Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and their android ally Kamelion aboard a prison ship. A ship with just one prisoner: Nustanu, last warlord of the Zamglitti – monstrous, mind-bending mimics able to turn themselves into mist.
A ship that’s in trouble, and about to make a crash-landing…
On a planet of mists.
And the brilliant cast:
Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to the recording (boo-hiss), but I can’t wait to hear how it sounds. Not long to wait though – Devil in the Mist is released in January 2019 and is available to pre-order from Big Finish Productions right now.
