Thought of the day: “I hope you make mistakes…”

May 21, 2013 2 Comments »

Hang on, how can we be careering to the end of May already. Gulp! That means I’ll soon be having to take my 6-months in look at my goals for 2013 to see how I’m doing.

The good thing, I guess, is that the reason time has been motoring past so fast is that I’ve been busy. I’ve also been throwing myself into a number of projects which, if I were on The Apprentice, Sir Alan Lord Sugar would no doubt call my “comfort zone, innit.”* Will they pay off? Who knows, and a few of them are scary in the extreme, but nothing ventured and all that…

In fact, a few times over the last couple of weeks I’ve been reminded of something Neil Gaiman wrote on his blog a couple of years ago. It is this:

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.

Clever man, that Mr Gaiman.

* it’s a little known fact that Sir Alan Lord Sugar quite often says “innit”. He is also heard to mutter “amazeballs”, but only on Tuesdays.**

** these two facts may well be lies.

Brilliant… a splendid affirmation (and on a personal note, perfectly timed).

I think it’s also important to remember that the only difference between a wise choice and a foolish one is time… at the moment of choice, it’s all the same, so don’t allow such considerations to paralyze you.

Can’t wait to discover what other wonders you’re exploring, Cavan. Honestly, the RL adventure of your life is just as engaging as the adventures you write about! :)

      Thanks Dave.

Exactly. This week has been a week of saying ‘OK, Scotty-boy, stop getting distracted and focus on the goal’. Whether its the right goal is yet to be seen.
